Hi Jens,

I'm glad you pointed out that the One Dot rule is a helpful way to keep the Least Knowledge principle in mind. We've also put 10 key principles in an Adobe AIR application for our readers to take to work. Unfortunately, I misspelled "Demeter" as "Dementer" in the AIR version. Therefore, like rare coins and stamps with a misprint this too will be the "rare" version after I get around to fixing it!

If there's any other way we can be helpful, let us know.

Kindest regards,
Bill

Hi Robert,

Your work has been so key for legions of ActionScript programmers that your comment is heartening indeed. On the other hand, that really puts the pressure on Chandima and me to be sure we have the highest quality and increases the expectations of our readers!

Wonderful to hear from you,
Bill

Hi Todd,

Thanks for the kind words. The Lunch Bucket series arose out of the fact that even those who support the concept of using design patterns found that they rarely use them at work. The reason behind that fact is the time pressure and the difficulty of quickly developing programs around design patterns. To help out, we decided that we needed to focus on the principles behind design patterns and some of the more generally useful renditions of design patterns that our readers could "put into their lunch bucket" and take to work. We've covered most of the principles for the Lunch Bucket series and next week we'll have the second Lunch Bucket design pattern. Of course we'll continue to have our regular discussions of design patterns and ActionScript.

In any event Chandima and I appreciate the fact that our readers find our musings useful and welcome feedback.

Kindest regards,
Bill

The One Dot Rule is indeed the easiest to remember. Simply always strive to put at most one dot before achieving the desired result (a method call or setting a property). Great article, looking forward to reading more on the subject.

Excellent article. I enjoyed the listing of different names for the principle. I'll be pointing other programmers to this for sure.

I just wanted to say how informative both your book and this blog have been for me. I feel that I am getting more out of these sources than full classes on programming. Keep up the good work, and thanks for the lunchbox rules, I am hoping to utilize them on a constant basis in my work.
